Installation hangs on “Windows Installer Coordinator”
When installing IBM i Access for Windows on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Services host it may hang on a dialog box that says, “Windows Installer Coordinator. Please wait while the application is preparing for the first use”.
It’s weird that I’ve been using Windows Server 2008 R2 for so long & never ran into this issue.
Anyway, to resolve the issue open gpedit.msc (or create a GPO, whatever you prefer) . Browse to Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Application Compatibility. Set Turn off Windows Installer RDS Compatibility to Enabled. Now run the installer again.

Thanks for posting this as I ran into the same exact issue today. 🙂
This worked perfectly! I wish I found this post 3 months ago! Solution worked perfectly!
Thank you! I changed this while the installer was hung on 2012 R2 and the moment I set it to Enabled the installer resumed.
Thanks for the tip I reference this page often 🙂 This happens quite frequently across clients, but I’ve always found that even when left running at the “Please wait..” screen once I’ve updated the GPO.. simply running a gpupdate /force immediately finishes the dialogue box and installation completes.
Thank you very much – this made my day.. 🙂
Thank you! Can’t believe I never ran into this before – anyway you made me look good 🙂

Thank You worked great for Windows Server 2012 R2
THANK YOU!!!!!!! I had 4 Citrix/Terminal Servers doing an update for West Case Notebook and all were hung at this. Once I selected Enabled and clicked Apply the install process continued instantly.
You may have to log off then back on to fully apply this change.
Have been running 2 days into this issue without a way to solve it. Thanks!
Worked immediately once I did this – I ran into this issue issue while updating Sage 50 2017 Accounting – hung for hours, then proceeded after this fix!
You just saved me a lot of hours, not to mention mitigated a strong headache. Cheers! 🙂
